This will be the Bug’s second return — the first was in 1998. (Digital image of what the next-gen VW Beetle may look like.)

And although it will still look like the original Beetle — rounded hood, round headlamps and tail lamps, and separate fenders covering each wheel — the new model will be more contoured.

This time around, the Beetle will also feature a much wider range of individualized exterior options. A concept version of Beetle 3.0 is expected to make an appearance at the Los Angeles auto show later this year. Expect to see it at dealerships in May 2011.

Just like the current Beetle, the new one will be assembled in Mexico.

VW spokespeople call this “sailing”

Shutting the engine down like this increases the engine-off operation of the Touareg into a range other hybrids have yet to achieve.

Take your foot off the gas pedal while coasting down an exit ramp and the engine shuts down. Lift your your foot from the throttle as you approach a pair of semis blocking the freeway, and the V-6 goes silent.

You can drive the Touareg at 80 mph for more than a mile in complete silence.

Volkswagen – Porsche has replaced Toyota as the world’s largest automaker. VW – Porsche largely benefited from the state-backed stimulus packages around the globe. VW has produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, while Toyota has only seen 4 million cars roll off the production line since January. VW reached this milestone after taking over Porsche, after Porsche failed to take VW over earlier this year.

Jalopnick noted that VW also over took GM, America’s largest automaker, who now sits in third globally.
