Rode hard and put away wet? Hardly.

This Toyota Corolla was apparently purchased from a dealership in 1986, driven home, parked in a subterranean garage and left there — for a quarter of a century. It has 48 kilometers on the odometer (that’s almost 29 miles) and that’s it.

The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave photographer Larry Chen, who has zero interest in anonymity, an opportunity to photograph the lovingly-preserved automotive artifact. Chen has posted a slew of his pictures here.

Volkswagen – Porsche has replaced Toyota as the world’s largest automaker. VW – Porsche largely benefited from the state-backed stimulus packages around the globe. VW has produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, while Toyota has only seen 4 million cars roll off the production line since January. VW reached this milestone after taking over Porsche, after Porsche failed to take VW over earlier this year.

Jalopnick noted that VW also over took GM, America’s largest automaker, who now sits in third globally.

Toyota announced that it will show the FT-86 concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show. A joint venture with Subaru this rear wheel drive low to the ground coupe sports a 2.0L boxer engine and 2+2 seating. Built with the idea of giving Toyota an “excitement injection” that President Akio Toyoda said is needed for the company’s future portfolio. The FT-86 name is in homage to the old AE86 Corolla famous for its rear wheel drive excitement and popularity in Drifting. The coup will be low the ground with a 101 inch wheel base and 68 inches wide allowing for driving excitement missed from Toyota since the MR2 and Celica were discontinued in 2006.

Toyota announced it will expand the use of the Prius name to a “a family of models” using similar hybrid powertrains. Toyota will have a range of Prius hybrid models, however, at this time the Prius will not be a separate sub-brand such as Scion. It’s unclear whether all Toyota-branded hybrids would receive the Prius name, however, the move makes sense as most Americans associate the Prius name with hybrids.

Toyota Motor Sales COO Jim Lentz has been pushing for a multi-platform Prius lineup for a year. But this was the first time it has been openly discussed in front of TMS President Yoshi Inaba and Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda.
