More surprises come our way from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Green cars have been the talk of the show this year with almost every manufacturer having shown an electric only car. Not to be out done Mitsubishi has shown off its new i-MiEV Cargo concept, a commercial cargo carrier that is built on the i-MiEV platform that could give a company 62 cu. ft. of cargo room. This may not seem like much but for a Japanese company looking for a light delivery vehicle the size and fuel price of the i-MiEV will be a sure hit. No word on if this could be a production vehicle as of yet.

Nissan continued its Green car roll call with the new Nissan Fuga hybrid, we know this car in the USA as the Infiniti M35. The Fuga is built with a hybrid system designed by Nissan unlike the automakers current models which use the Hybrid Synergy Drive from Toyota. The new hybrid system will have a 50 kW (67 horsepower) and 270 Nm (200 pound-feet) of torque and a VQ35 engine attached to a 7 speed automatic transmission. No mention of it’s predicted MPG, but expect something in the low 30′s.

Not all the cars debuted this year are all about the green, some are all about the speed. Subaru introduced to the Japanese market the Impreza STI Carbon. With optional 2.0L or 2.5L turbocharged engines the STI carbon comes with a all carbon fiber roof and upscale interior. Unlike other versions of Impreza STI the Carbon will only be featured with a 5 speed automatic transmission. For now it will only be offered in Japan but with enough demand it may make its way to the United States in the future.

Highlights From Day One of the Tokyo Auto Show

The Tokyo Motor Show begins today. With that a slew of new and future models are being announced from mostly Japanese Automakers. Green cars, sports cars, and green sports cars are the talk of the show this year. First up is the Lexus LF-A super car, Toyota’s first entry into the super car world includes a V10 engine that revs to 9000 rpm and maxes out at 560 HP. The LF-A will run 0-62 MPH of 3.7 seconds and top speed of 201 MPH but is limited to 500 units. Next up is the Nissan Leaf, the all electric vehicle has been announced for production in the near future along with the NV200 all electric commercial vehicle. Last but certainly not least is the much anticipated Honda CR-Z. The spiritual successor to the Honda CR-X, the CR-Z will sport a 1.5L hybrid drive train and an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. This will be the first hybrid vehicle designed with a 6-speed manual transmission and will be built as a sports coupe.

Toyota to Preview FT-86 at Tokyo Motor Show

Toyota announced that it will show the FT-86 concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show. A joint venture with Subaru this rear wheel drive low to the ground coupe sports a 2.0L boxer engine and 2+2 seating. Built with the idea of giving Toyota an “excitement injection” that President Akio Toyoda said is needed for the company’s future portfolio. The FT-86 name is in homage to the old AE86 Corolla famous for its rear wheel drive excitement and popularity in Drifting. The coup will be low the ground with a 101 inch wheel base and 68 inches wide allowing for driving excitement missed from Toyota since the MR2 and Celica were discontinued in 2006. The production model will be shown sometime next year with sales beginning sometime in late 2011 carrying a sticker price somewhere north of $20,000.

Suzuki Hydrogen Fuel Cell Concepts to be Displayed at Tokyo Motor Show

Suzuki is going to show 3 Hydrogen Fuel Cell concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. The first is the SX4-FCV with a 80 kW hydrogen fuel cell stack and 10,000 psi storage tank. The car will be powered by a 68 kW electric motor that is shared with the Swift Hybrid and also includes regenerative braking to aid in power production.

Next up is one of Suzuki world famous scooters the Burgman sporting a 70MPa hydrogen tank, the highest-pressure tank used on a bike this far. This should give the scooter a usable riding range. No word on what sort of power or performance stats will be. And the tank is mounted within a robust frame for safety.

Last but not least is the MIO electric fuel cell wheelchair. The MIO will have a direct-methanol fuel cell that has replaceable fuel cartridges that will allow for an unlimited range as long as fuel stations are available.

Suzuki will have more info and products coming up at the Tokyo Motor Show this October.

Tokyo 2009 Preview: Suzuki Swift Hybrid Plug-in Concept

The Suzuki Swift that is currently available in Japan and Europe will be on display at the the Tokyo Motor Show with a plug-in concept. The Swift Hybrid concept will feature a plug in series hybrid that uses an electric motor for propulsion and a 660cc gas engine to power the lithium-ion battery packs for extended range. A unique feature of the Swift Hybrid is the mounting of the battery packs in the center console and extending them into the rear seat area. The electric motor is 54kW with about 74 HP turning the front wheels. There is no word of this concept being available in the United State yet, however, Suzuki is planning to bring a Swift over for the next model year.
