Mercedes-Benz F800 Style Concept is Not Your Father’s Plug-in Hybrid

Mercedes-Benz is experimenting with plug-in hybrids that can run on batteries or a fuel cell.

The F 800 Style, “multi-drive” concept car riffs on the same technology used in the S 400 Hybrid and the B-Class F-Cell.

But the look is brand new, sort of…it’s actually reminiscent of the classic 300SL Gullwing Coupe.

The F800 “research vehicle” is scheduled to appear next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

Toyota Moving Slowly to Build Plug-in Hybrid

Even though it built the Mother of All green vehicles, Toyota is apparently taking its time in building an all-electric car.

“We’re not looking around at the latest PR articles, and saying ‘oh my gosh, we have to change our plans because somebody said this or that,’” said Doug Coleman, US-based Prius product manager at Toyota.

“We’re pacing ourselves in a way that we think that we can be competitive in a few years time for a market that makes sense for both us and the customer,” he said.

230 mpg for the Chevy Volt? Maybe so, Maybe no

Whether the Chevy Volt — due in 2011 — will get 230 miles per gallon or not, the proposed plug-in hybrid electric vehicle still continues to get plenty of attention.

If all goes according to plan, sales are set to commence in November 2010. The EPA said it hasn’t tested the vehicle yet, and cannot confirm the 230 mpg claim.

BMW’s MINI E Gets Schooled

During the next year, the University of California Davis will be asking volunteer drivers of BMW’s all-electric MINI Es how they use the cars and how they like them. The answers will be collected in online surveys, during interviews, and collected from information in travel diaries.

UCD, which has a dedicated Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Research Center, say findings of the year-long study will be made available to the public. The school believes it the results could “influence understanding of the future role of electric vehicles for many stakeholders, including electric utilities, governments and automakers.”

Buick hybrid plug-in due in 2011?

General Motors new Buick crossover is set to hit dealer showrooms sometime next year – a plug-in hybrid version will follow in 2011. But reports also indicate a smaller crossover will be joining Buick’s lineup.

The baby Buick CUV will be about the size of Ford’s upcoming Fiesta, offering seating for five, and could give Buick a legitimate alternative to MINI’s upcoming CUV.
