Shot at and hit: Vintage Chrysler Imperials get a beat down in new Green Hornet

If you’re in San Diego and jonesin’ to see the cars in Britt Reid’s garage, stop by Comic-Con International 2010 where you can get a live sneak preview at all things Green Hornet. Set to open next year, the upcoming Green Hornet movie – which is based on the 1966-1967 TV series that starred Bruce Lee – will feature 29 1964-66 Chrysler Imperials; many of them were crashed, some were cut in two, and at least one was riddled with bullet holes.

Twenty-nine 1960s-era Chrysler Imperials readied for their close-ups – and crashes – for new Green Hornet movie

Probably the most difficult part of re-making the popular 1966 Green Hornet TV series into a new Hollywood movie?

Rounding up 29 1964 – 66 Chrysler Imperials and readying them for their close-ups – and lots of crashes.

Only two of the original Chrysler Imperials used in the 1966 TV series — the one that starred Van Williams and a then unknown Bruce Lee as Kato, Black Beauty’s driver — still exist. Both of them have been completely restored and neither were used in the new movie which is set for release in 2011.

In order to film scenes with the new Black Beauty, 29 ’60s-era Imperials were fit with roll cages, some were cut in two, and at least one had it’s suspension beefed up enough in to survive long leaps and intense landings.

Forget about the actors — or stunt men — who drove them. Steve McQueen withstanding, it’s often the car that steals the show. The Batmobile, The Green Hornet’s Black Beauty, Christine…heck, even Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…they all had star — and staying — power.

Wired recently managed to track down a few famous automobiles — and one bicycle — that were used in some movies you’ve may have seen…once or twice.
