It’s alive — again: Classic Restorations revives classic Shelby Mustang

Don’t call it a kit: This 1967 Shelby is actually conjured from a real ’67 or ’68 fastback Mustang. The reconstruction, which takes months, results in a “Shelby” that looks just like a Shelby — but also includes modern conveniences like rack and pinion steering.

Oklahoma-based Classic Restorations builds each Shelby G.T.500CR by hand. Modern amenities also include authentic Shelby Performance Parts, race inspired suspension and oversized disc brakes. Every one of the Shelby G.T.500CRs is included in the Shelby Worldwide Registry. Classic Recreations’ vehicles are even approved by Shelby American, and include Shelby serial numbers.

As for the price, not so retro; the revenant muscle car ranges from $119,000 to just about $200,00.

Now if only Classic Restorations would harken back to 1971, and bring back the Mach 1.

Silent hybrids and EVs poised to make noise

When it comes to electric and hybrid automobiles, silence isn’t necessarily golden. It’s actually a hazard.

The AAM, along with the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, the American Council for the Blind and the National Federation for the Blind have agreed on a plan to address a potential problem caused by electric and hybrid cars — they can endanger sight-impaired and distracted pedestrians because they’re too quiet.

Collectively, the groups have suggested new language that could become part of the Motor Safety Act of 2010, a bill now moving through Congress that would create new auto safety rules.

Sometimes even sighted pedestrians can be unaware of the cars’ approach. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study that showed that hybrid cars tend to hit pedestrians more often than other cars in situations where the approaching car cannot be seen.

Nissan engineers recently suggested another solution to the problem: Giving the Nissan Leaf the whirring sound like Rick Deckard’s Blade Runner police spinner. The sound would kick in automatically when the car starts, then shut off at about 12 mph.

Nissan Leaf Makes Time’s Top 50 Innovations of 2009 List

With the end of the year quickly approaching, its time for the best and worst list for the year. Time Magazine recently released its 50 Most Important Inventions of 2009 list. The Nissan Leaf, which was unveiled in August as the companies first dedicated electric vehicle made the list. Nissan intends for it the be mass produced and sold globally as a reasonable price.

Other innovations included the WorldFirst Formula 3 race car developed with the use of bio-materials in some of its components. The steering wheel contains carrot fibers and the mirrors use potato starch while the engine runs on chocolate and vegetable biodiesel. The Honda U3-X personal mobility device also made the list.

Nissan LEAF Zero Emission Tour

The Nissan Leaf zero-emission, all electric car will embark on a nationwide tour with its North American debut in Los Angeles on Nov. 13. The Nissan LEAF Zero Emission Tour will make stops in 22 cities, in 11 states, the District of Columbia, and Vancouver, Canada, offering the opportunity for interested drivers, media, civic partners, businesses and university students to learn more about the Nissan LEAF and the benefits of zero-emission driving. Attendees will be the first to see the five-passenger, five-door, gasoline-free car.

More surprises come our way from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Green cars have been the talk of the show this year with almost every manufacturer having shown an electric only car. Not to be out done Mitsubishi has shown off its new i-MiEV Cargo concept, a commercial cargo carrier that is built on the i-MiEV platform that could give a company 62 cu. ft. of cargo room. This may not seem like much but for a Japanese company looking for a light delivery vehicle the size and fuel price of the i-MiEV will be a sure hit. No word on if this could be a production vehicle as of yet.

Nissan continued its Green car roll call with the new Nissan Fuga hybrid, we know this car in the USA as the Infiniti M35. The Fuga is built with a hybrid system designed by Nissan unlike the automakers current models which use the Hybrid Synergy Drive from Toyota. The new hybrid system will have a 50 kW (67 horsepower) and 270 Nm (200 pound-feet) of torque and a VQ35 engine attached to a 7 speed automatic transmission. No mention of it’s predicted MPG, but expect something in the low 30′s.

Not all the cars debuted this year are all about the green, some are all about the speed. Subaru introduced to the Japanese market the Impreza STI Carbon. With optional 2.0L or 2.5L turbocharged engines the STI carbon comes with a all carbon fiber roof and upscale interior. Unlike other versions of Impreza STI the Carbon will only be featured with a 5 speed automatic transmission. For now it will only be offered in Japan but with enough demand it may make its way to the United States in the future.

Highlights From Day One of the Tokyo Auto Show

The Tokyo Motor Show begins today. With that a slew of new and future models are being announced from mostly Japanese Automakers. Green cars, sports cars, and green sports cars are the talk of the show this year. First up is the Lexus LF-A super car, Toyota’s first entry into the super car world includes a V10 engine that revs to 9000 rpm and maxes out at 560 HP. The LF-A will run 0-62 MPH of 3.7 seconds and top speed of 201 MPH but is limited to 500 units. Next up is the Nissan Leaf, the all electric vehicle has been announced for production in the near future along with the NV200 all electric commercial vehicle. Last but certainly not least is the much anticipated Honda CR-Z. The spiritual successor to the Honda CR-X, the CR-Z will sport a 1.5L hybrid drive train and an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. This will be the first hybrid vehicle designed with a 6-speed manual transmission and will be built as a sports coupe.
