Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died Oct. 5, had an impact not only on technology, he also had a tremendous influence on the auto industry.

Very few of the automobiles today come without a jack that connects to iPads and iPhones. Many car stereos are even capable of connecting with iPod touches and iPhones via bluetooth. Of course, this technology works with other media players and cell phones — but this kind of connectivity would never have happened had it not been for Apple’s iPhone and iPods.

According to Apple’s website, more than 90 percent of new cars sold in the U.S. have an option for iPod connectivity. And many iPod-ready audio systems use a connector cable similar to the one that connects an iPod to a computer.

A number automakers have found ways to incorporate Apple’s devices like the iPad, iPhone and iPod into their vehicles. And auto hackers have posted a numbers of ways to tastefully incorporate Mac minis into auto dashboards.

The Slow Down app uses the iPhone’s built-in sensors to determine when you’re exceeding the speed limit. And if you are driving too fast, the app slows down the tempo of the music.

It helps to have your iPhone mounted on your windshield, where it can be seen as well as heard … unless you drive to fast; then the music stops.

Of course, if you’re listening to Julie London’s Go Slow or Miles Davis’ It Never Entered my Mind or George Jones’ What a Good Year for the Roses … well, there’s not much of a point to slowing down the tempo.

Interesting, still.

Driving fast or slow or with the lights down low, OdoClub members earn rewards for every mile they drive. And the rewards can be redeemed at participating dealerships for discounts on goods and services.

Next year, the hands-free system will be available on the Ford Fiesta for Blackberry and Android phones. Although it won’t initially be available for the iPhone — the smartphone that introduced the planet to smartphone apps — Ford will eventually make a version for the iPhone, too.

Right now, there are only three Sync-enabled apps: Pandora internet radio, Stitcher “smart radio” and OpenBeak. But Ford is also creating a “Mobile Application Developer Network,” which, hopefully, will lead to more smart phone apps.”

You can read more here.
