With elections just a day away, it’s timely to learn that the vehicles of choice for senators and congressmen are Chevrolet Tahoe hybrids and Cadillac Escalade hybrids.

But what about some of the candidates on the ballots? Joe Sestak drives a Prius; Scott Ashjian rolls in a Mercedes S63 AMG; Charlie Rangel prefers a Cadillac DeVille and 1972 Mercedes … that he all but abandoned in an underground parking lot.

The EPA has named the top 10 fuel-efficient cars built since 1984 — and No. 1 is the decade-old 2000 Honda Insight.

In fact, six of the EPA’s top 10-ranked fuel sippers were built before 2000.

Four of the top 10 — including the 2010 Toyota Prius, 2010 Honda Insight (pictured) and the 2006-2010 Honda Civic Hybrid — got top spots, too.

But the fuel efficiency of older, lighter cars like Chevy’s 1986 Chevy Sprint ER or the 1990-1994 Geo Metro XFI are a good indication that automakers should maybe consider backward — not forward — thinking when it comes to fuel economy.

Read more here, and visit the the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website to learn how the list the was compiled.

If you’re fortunate enough to drive a 10-year-old, better than state of the art, fuel efficient vehicle, that’s terrific. Nevertheless, OdoClub can still help you save while you drive. OdoClub is a dealership loyalty program that even helps save you money on the purchase of your next vehicle — hybrid or not.

It’s actually a hazard.

The AAM, along with the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, the American Council for the Blind and the National Federation for the Blind have agreed on a plan to address a potential problem caused by electric and hybrid cars — they can endanger sight-impaired and distracted pedestrians because they’re too quiet.

Collectively, the groups have suggested new language that could become part of the Motor Safety Act of 2010, a bill now moving through Congress that would create new auto safety rules.

Sometimes even sighted pedestrians can be unaware of the cars’ approach. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study that showed that hybrid cars tend to hit pedestrians more often than other cars in situations where the approaching car cannot be seen.

Nissan engineers recently suggested another solution to the problem: Giving the Nissan Leaf the whirring sound like Rick Deckard’s Blade Runner police spinner. The sound would kick in automatically when the car starts, then shut off at about 12 mph.

Read the complete money.cnn.com story here.

Doesn’t matter if you live in a hybrid-friendly city and drive a car that sounds like Deckard’s police spinner, you’ll benefit from joining OdoClub, the only personal road miles program that helps you save while you drive. OdoClub is a dealership loyalty program that even helps save you money on the purchase of your next vehicle.

Using info from cars.com, cities were ranked according to the number of potential buyers in the area who searched for hybrid cars, trucks or SUVs while looking for new vehicles within the past year.

Many Southern cities fell to the bottom of the list; several college towns appeared high on it.

Laredo, Texas came in at No. 210. Albany, Georgia — best known as the birthplace of Ray Charles — was ranked 189.

Other Northern California cities — including Monterey, Salinas, and Sacramento — made the list, too.

Two southern California residents are going off the grid, but staying on the road.

To meet their electrical energy needs, Peder and Julie Nordby, installed solar panels on the rooftop of their home. They also got a BMW Mini E.

Their home’s rooftop solar panels generate 12,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year — enough to power their entire home and their BBW Mini E.

The Mini E’s regenerative braking system gives the small car a lot of perk. Software in the EV’s computer system give it a slight pause when the acceleration pedal is initial pressed — this prevents burnout from a standstill — and the Mini’s response quickly reverts to normal.

Although EVs like the mini cost more than traditional vehicles, and solar panels are expensive, the Norby’s are breaking away from the electrical grid, avoiding power outages, unsightly power lines — and lines at the gas pump.
