Maserati BiTurbo Gets Clunkered

The owner of a pristine 1985 Maserati BiTurbo has traded the Italian classic in as a clunker for the Cash for Clunkers program. The car — which is in pristine physical condition and only has 18,480 miles — was traded in at Go Subaru in Golden, Colorado

Wes Guthrie, a salesperson at Go Subaru, said everyone was surprised when the Maserati owner wanted to trade it in a clunker.

“I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a cool car,’” Guthrie said.

“Cash for Clunkers” Program Re-booted

Almost undone by its own success, the government’s “cash for clunkers” program was almost out of money when the House passed legislation that contributed an addtional $2 billion to the program.

The fate of the $1 billion Car Allowance Rebate System program (its official name) was up in the air late Thursday over concerns it would run out of money before the week was over.

House members acted within hours, exploring the possibility of how to replenish the funding.

Kelley Blue Book Offers Free Online Service Outlining ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Rules

On July 24, the government’s Car Allowance Rebate System program — it’s informally referred to as “Cash for Clunkers” — begins.

To help car owners better understand the program, Irvine, Calif-based Kelley Blue Book is offering a free online service that outlines the rules for Cash for Clunkers, as well as a ‘Clunker Calculator‘ to determine if the program will help them.

Cash for Clunkers makes it possible for consumers to qualify for a $4,500 rebate on the purchase or lease of a new vehicle that get 10 miles per gallon more than a trade-in car or 5 mpg or more than a trade-in light truck.

New cars that achieve between 4 – 9 mpg more than a trade-in car, or 2 – 4 mpg more than a trade-in light truck qualify for a $3,500 incentive.

Federal Car Allowance Rebate System (“Cash for Clunkers”) Begins

The federal Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) has begun offering up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new car when owners of older, less fuel efficient cars trade-in their vehicles.

Although the CARS Act makes transactions on and after July 1 potentially eligible for credits under the program, dealers and consumers may want to wait until July 24 when the final rules for the cars program will be released. Congress has allocated $1 billion for the vouchers — an amount that could run out early.

To be eligible, the trade-in vehicle must get 18 miles or less per gallon, and it can’t be more than 25-years old. Trade-in vouchers range in face-value from $3,500-$4,500.

You can go to fueleconomy.gov to find out if your automobile’s gas mileage makes you eligible to participate.

A popular misconception is that the program is called “Cash for Clunkers.” It isn’t. The official name of the program is Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program. Its official Web site is www.cars.gov (Car Allowance Rebate System).

The CARS program ends November 1, 2009, or when all funding for the program is exhausted.

The U.S. House recently approved the “cash for clunkers” legislation, and consumers could receive $4,500 in rebates for trading in gas-guzzlers for newer, more fuel efficient vehicles.

The bill drew overwhelming support from automakers, local business groups and dealers who contend its passage could improve auto sales during the economic downturn.

The bill has been under negotiations for months as lawmakers attempted to find a solution that would increase car sales while providing environmental benefits. In In Europe, similar programs have boosted auto sales.
