To meet their electrical energy needs, Peder and Julie Nordby, installed solar panels on the rooftop of their home. They also got a BMW Mini E.

Their home’s rooftop solar panels generate 12,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year — enough to power their entire home and their BBW Mini E.

The Mini E’s regenerative braking system gives the small car a lot of perk. Software in the EV’s computer system give it a slight pause when the acceleration pedal is initial pressed — this prevents burnout from a standstill — and the Mini’s response quickly reverts to normal.

Although EVs like the mini cost more than traditional vehicles, and solar panels are expensive, the Norby’s are breaking away from the electrical grid, avoiding power outages, unsightly power lines — and lines at the gas pump.

Todd Jamison’s 2004 Hyundai Elantra was recently the victim of the world’s worst parking job. More than 1.5 million people have watched a BMV X5 driver perform the worst parking job ever by hitting the gas instead of the brake. The driver ended up driving on top to two other cars and crushing them. One of them was Jamison’s Elantra, which he had just finished paying off a month before the incident.

To make up for his misfortune Hyundai gave Jamison a brand new Hyundai Elantra Touring.

You may be surprised to learn that many high end vehicles retain their value the longer vehicles than vehicles that are the cheapest upfront. The general wisdom is that new cars lose up to 20% of their value the moment they’re driven off the lot, and about 65% after five years, the Sedona, Town Car, Sebring and Caravan each lost more than 67% of their value after just two years–and 82% after five years. In comparison, the Audi A5 and BMW X5 both retained 40% of their value in 5 years.

It’s rumored that BMW’s Vision Efficient Dynamics Concepts that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this month will spawn a production eco-friendly supercar. According to Auto Express the new green M1 will be available for sell in 21012.

The heart of this rumored super car is a hybrid powertrain similar to the one shown off in Frankfurt. A turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine displacing 1.5 liters would be used in conjunction with a pair of electric motors providing all-wheel drive capabilities. The run to 60 mph would theoretically take less than five seconds and top speed would reportedly be capped at 155 mph.

Other unique bits that were introduced on the Vision Concept that could potentially make it into production include active aerodynamic elements that allow for an excellent .22 coefficient of drag. An unknown source tells AE that the car’s hybrid powertrain, dual clutch gearbox and aluminum-intensive chassis are all “ready for the road.”

If true, the new eco-friendly M1 successor would be marketed as a rival to the Audi R8 and would potentially hit the market with a price well north of $100,000.
