Hawaii to Open First Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station

On January 23 Hawaii will will open the first public electric car charging station. It will go into service n the Kaka’ako area of Honolulu. Plus until the end of March people can plug-in for free. After that, the charger will be put into service. Drivers will be able to charge 24-7. Hawaii is perhaps the ideal place since the island is so small there is no range anxiety and warm weather doens’t affect batteries. Plus since they import oil its incredibly expensive.

Electric Car Day at Cars & Coffee Irvine

A multitude of electric vehicles appeared this morning at Cars & Coffee Irvine. The two stars of the show being the Chevy Volt and Chevy Fuel Cell test mule. With a squad of Volt product specialist in tow Chevy’s presence was the big draw for the light crowd on this cold November morning. Details about the Volt Chevrolet was willing to share included that the Volt is expected to be in Showrooms November 2010 and although EPA numbers are not official that you can expect to see around 50 MPG from the 1.4L gas engine when it is running. For recharging the batter you will plug into a standardized SAE plug for electric cars, the engine will not recharge the batter only provide electricity need to run the car while it is on.

Tesla was in Irvine as well with its own pair of Tesla Roadsters to show off in blue and red. Tesla representative was answering plenty of questions about the new Model S sedan out next year. Although the Model S will not be the pure sports car that the Roadster is the performance numbers were no less impressive with 5.6 second 0-60, 45 minute quick charge time and 300 mile range this will be an impressive electric sedan. Seating for 7 and twice the cargo room of a standard sedan will make the $49,900 price tag (after $7,500 federal incentive) a great value.

Not to be left out an Electric Mini made an appearance, although not in a official capacity as this is a current leased one by a private owner. He did not have too many details for us but did say that he gets on average 100 miles out of a charge of the batteries and it has plenty of pick up with the electric motor. What Should General Motors Name the Chevy Volts New Color?

The initial production color of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) is a silver exterior with an emerald hue. However, General Motors is giving fans the opportunity the name the distinctive color. Submissions will be accepted through 8 a.m. ET November 4. Finalists will win a trip to the LA Auto Show for themselves and a guest. Plus the winner will have the opportunity to drive the Volt and submit a guest blog entry.

Drew Barrymore to Race Ford Focus EV in Leno’s Green Car Challenge

Drew Barrymore will be the first celebrity to race a Ford Focus EV in Jay Leno’s Green Car Challenge. Following Barrymore’s initial time trial, Leno will rope other stars into racing the sponsored Focus on a special track built outside the show’s new studio once or twice a week. Autos are a large part of the show’s decor and cars will be featured on stage, thanks to a large door that will allow Leno to drive onto the set.

Shocking news: Electric vehicles can be fast, too. Case in point, Tesla Motors new Roadster.

Even though they’ve been around for about a century, electric vehicles have never really got that much respect. But that could change now that Tesla’s zero-emissions Roadster — which can travel about 220 miles on a single charge — has proven that EVs can perform as handily as their gasoline-powered counterparts.
