Ford says its new AppLink — a program that that lets drivers use voice commands to access smartphone apps — is a response to its customers’ requests for a way to keep their hands on the wheel while while they use voice commands to access smartphone apps.

Next year, the hands-free system will be available on the Ford Fiesta for Blackberry and Android phones. Although it won’t initially be available for the iPhone — the smartphone that introduced the planet to smartphone apps — Ford will eventually make a version for the iPhone, too.

Right now, there are only three Sync-enabled apps: Pandora internet radio, Stitcher “smart radio” and OpenBeak. But Ford is also creating a “Mobile Application Developer Network,” which, hopefully, will lead to more smart phone apps.”
