General Motors is working with researchers from several universities to develop a windshield system that will integrate night vision, navigation and on-board cameras to improve motorists’ ability to see, and hopefully avoid, problems while driving — particularly during foggy conditions.

The windshield is coated with transparent phosphors that emit light when excited by a compact laser, which basically turns the entire windshield into a monitor. This makes it possible for the experimental system to alert drivers to objects that may be beyond their immediate field of vision.
