Ford recently unveiled inflatable seat belts, which Ford claims will not decapitate the heads of small children or compress the thoraxes of the elderly. The seat belt, inflates via an inert cold compressed gas that flows through a channel in the buckle in about the same time it takes a car traveling at highway speeds to go two feet. A balloon in the belt expands to five times the size of the belt in order to distribute pressure from the crash more evenly across your body. Ford claims this new seat belt technology is not an air bag.
