Volkswagen’s new hybrid Touareg’s cool feature is that it can shut down its V-6 engine while going as fast as 99 mph. VW spokespeople call this “sailing”
Shutting the engine down like this increases the engine-off operation of the Touareg into a range other hybrids have yet to achieve.
Take your foot off the gas pedal while coasting down an exit ramp and the engine shuts down. Lift your your foot from the throttle as you approach a pair of semis blocking the freeway, and the V-6 goes silent.
You can drive the Touareg at 80 mph for more than a mile in complete silence.

The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid may be small, but it produces big. The Evora is capable of generating 414 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque — all with electric motors, one for each rear wheel.
The Evora also has a gasoline motor that powers a generator when its lithium-ion battery pack is tapped out. The battery pack is good for 35 miles, then a Lotus-designed monoblock three-cylinder engine kicks in.
Lotus hasn’t said when, or if, the Evora 414E will see production…but it sure is pretty to think it will.

Hyundai’s latest eco-friendly concept vehicle is being revealed this week at the Geneva auto show.
The aerodynamic i-flow, with a look that has been described as “fluidic sculpture,” is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in next year.
The i-flow’s features an adaptive front spoiler and side rocker blade, jewel-like headlamps and tail lamps and Hyundai’s hexagonal grille.
But it’s what’s under the hood — and on the roof — that takes the vehicle to a deeper shade of “green.” The i-flow has a diesel-hybrid powertrain, which includes two-stage turbocharging for the 1.7-liter engine that works with a lithium-ion-polymer battery and a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission.
The i-flow also has solar panels on the roof and a thermo-electric generator that recovers energy.

Want to avoid speed traps and roadside brush fires, or find friends while cruising along in road tip caravans?
There’s an app for that.
With its large user base, Trapster has become a customizable, data-rich resource for motorists wishing to skirt speed traps. Trapster is available for the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android. The recently updated mobile phone app is an easy way to learn where police speed traps are located — and hopefully avoid tickets.
In addition to alerting drivers to speed traps, the latest version of Trapster also alerts you to road closures, construction zones, brush fires…and maybe even dead skunks in the middle of the road.
You can learn more about Trapster here.

Mercedes-Benz is experimenting with plug-in hybrids that can run on batteries or a fuel cell.
The F 800 Style, “multi-drive” concept car riffs on the same technology used in the S 400 Hybrid and the B-Class F-Cell.
But the look is brand new, sort of…it’s actually reminiscent of the classic 300SL Gullwing Coupe.
The F800 “research vehicle” is scheduled to appear next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

A minivan built by a major U.S. automaker…that costs $5,000…and gets 40 miles per gallon?
Check.
Even though you might not ever have heard of it, the Wuling Sunshine is very popular. GM and its partner Wuling sold more than 560,000 of the minivans last year.
And for a minivan, it’s really mini. It’s powered by a three-cyclinder engine, and has a top speed of about 80 miles per hour. It does come with a radio, but there’s no seat belt in the back row.
